- Flolan

GlaxoSmithKline makes Flolan (epoprostenol), a blood vessel dilator used intravenously that can lessen symptoms of pulmonary hypertension such as shortness of breath and chest pain. The medication can also improve stamina and reduce the risk of blood clots. In cases of severe pulmonary hypertension, Flolan therapy is used to prolong and improve patients' lives. Flolan is continuously infused through an intravenous catheter attached to a small pump that's worn in a pack on the shoulder or belt. - Theracom Flolan Care Program

- Remodulin

United Therapeutics produces Remodulin (treprostinil), another prostacyclin medication that helps relax blood vessels, allowing them to widen and increase the supply of blood to the lungs. This recently approved form of prostacyclin can be delivered subcutaneously, or just under the skin; it's administered by a small pump worn on the belt. Remodulin is distributed in the U.S. by Priority Healthcare, Accredo Therapeutics, and Caremark. - Tracleer

Actelion makes Tracleer (bosetan), one of the first oral forms of prostacyclin. It's designed to improve stamina and exercise ability in patients with pulmonary hypertension. Tracleer blocks the action of endothelin, a substances that narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure. - Norvasc

Pfizer produces Norvasc (amlodipine besylate), a calcium channel blocker used to reduce high blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels; it's prescribed for people with ordinary hypertension as well as those who have pulmonary hypertension. - Cardizem

Cardizem (diltiazem HCl) is produced by Biovail Pharmaceuticals. - Viagra

Pfizer also produces Viagra (sildenafil), a drug better known for treating erectile dysfunction. It has recently emerged, however, as a new therapy for pulmonary hypertension. The medication has been found to relax smooth muscle cells, allowing arteries to widen, thus decreasing blood pressure.
